The 22-year-old has been a revelation this season, having joined in the summer, with electric performances on the left wing.

Gordon, in his second season with the club, has scored 12 goals in a successful campaign so far – while Adebayo has put in a handful of exceptional performances after initial struggling in his first season at the Banks’s Stadium.

Now, McDonald has praised them both for their versatility and willingness to improve.

“Josh is a great player with a great attitude – he’ll play wherever the gaffer needs him to play,” he said. “He’s done a good job out wide, scored some goals and created some goals.

“Josh Gordon has done very well out wide.

“Elijah is a top player, he can be very versatile.

“When I was playing with him (at Fulham) from under-13s all the way up to the youth team, he actually used to play as a centre-back.

“He could always play up top because technically he’s very good for a big man.

“It’s a pleasure to play with him and he’s a good mate of mine as well. Elijah is a very funny character, without him even knowing – he’s a funny guy.”

Meanwhile, McDonald has insisted there was no ‘penny dropping moment’ that led to his impressive form, but stated it began when he took his opportunity away at Crawley in September when he scored and assisted in a 3-2 win.

“I wouldn’t say there was a penny dropping moment, I was just training hard and waiting for my opportunity,” he added. “Then I got it against Crawley and I wanted to take that opportunity. As a player you want more game time so I continued what I was doing and tried to be as consistent as possible.

“The more game time I was getting, the fitter I was getting, the intensity raised and I was looking to help the team out as much as possible – creating chances and scoring.”
