The 47-year-old former striker joined Darrell Clarke's coaching team in the summer and had built a good relationship with the club's forwards – as many of them credited him for his work on the training pitch.

Before football was suspended due to the coronavirus, Stewart was travelling every day from Bristol to the Black Country and has now decided, having spent lockdown at home, to spend more time with his family and leave his post.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Walsall,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed linking up with Darrell and Brian Dutton again and working with Maik Taylor, the players and staff.

“I am based in Bristol and the travel and time away from my family has been difficult. During this period of time at home, I’ve come to realise what I’m sacrificing and want to spend more time with my family.

“I would also like to say a big thank you to the supporters who have been fantastic to me during my time at the club.

“I wish the club all the best for the remainder of this season and in the future.”

In a statement, the club also added: "We would like to thank Marcus for his hard work and dedication during his time at the Banks’s Stadium and wish him all the best for the future."
