The 32-year-old has enjoyed a successful career, playing for several big clubs such as Liverpool and Newcastle, before joining Walsall last summer.

His first campaign in the Black Country has seen him produce an array of good performances, despite being hampered by several injuries, while the club currently sits in mid-table – and Guthrie has no plans to give up his playing days yet and he wants his future to be with the Saddlers.

“I want to play as long as possible, I love football – playing and competing,” he said.

“All I can see is me playing for Walsall and my ambition now is to get Walsall back in League One.

“At 32, looking at the league, I don’t think I’ve come up against anyone in my position this year and thought they were better.

“I think I’m the best midfielder in the league and I have to think like that.

“When I’m fully fit, I don’t think there’s anyone better than me in the league in centre midfield.

“I want to play for as long as possible and I’d love for it to be at Walsall.”
