Walsall planning as normal for match with struggling Macclesfield

Walsall are planning for Saturday’s match against Macclesfield to go ahead as normal despite uncertainty continuing to surround the cash-strapped visitors.

The League Two encounter at the Banks’s is in doubt with the Silkmen embroiled in a financial meltdown which has seen their players go on strike over unpaid wages.

That lead to last weekend’s match with Crewe suspended by the EFL, with Macclesfield owner Amar Alkadhi said to be in talks over takeover to end the crisis.

For now the Saddlers have no option but to take a watching brief and work on the presumption the match will go ahead, until they are told otherwise.

A statement released on Tuesday said: “Following a number of queries regarding Saturday’s scheduled home fixture with Macclesfield Town, the club can confirm that we have spoken with the EFL and the message is that the game is going ahead.

“As such all planning and preparation will continue as normal.

“If there is an update we will share this with you at the earliest opportunity.”

Macclesfield have endured a series of off-field issues, including an ongoing winding-up petition filed by HM Revenue & Customs that has received the backing of former manager Sol Campbell.

The High Court was told last week the 45-year-old ex-England defender is owed £180,000 by the club.
