The left-back saw his contract expire at the end of last season, but Clarke triggered a 12-month option in order to keep him at the Banks’s Stadium.

Cockerill-Mollett impressed on his Walsall debut, when he was given a start at Fleetwood on the final day of the 2017/18 campaign.

But he spent all of last season out on loan with spells in non-league with AFC Telford United and Chasetown.

“First impressions go a long way and I want to impress the manager so that I am always in his mind,” Cockerill-Mollett said. “I had a phone call with him (Clarke) when the released and retained list was announced and he wants me to be in and around the first team this season because he likes to work with a small group of players. “

It has given me the confidence and belief to go into pre-season with the aim of earning that left-back spot for the first game of the season.”
