Dean Keates hopes lay-off will bring benefits for Walsall

Boss Dean Keates says Walsall will take the positives from their game at Bradford being called off – even though they wanted the game to go ahead.

The Saddlers saw yesterday’s match at Valley Parade postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

And while Keates has now had to alter his training program for the week, he believes it could benefit the team long-term.

“We’d have liked to have played to get some points on the board,” he said.

“But to take the positives out of it, any little niggles in the squad are given the chance to wind down ahead of the game on Saturday.

“It might work in our favour in that way because Bradford had an extra two days of recovery time on us.

"With the game being called off it also gave myself and Sharpy (coach Ian Sharps) the chance to watch opponents coming up.

“The lads will train today now. They were sharp on Sunday despite the loss to Portsmouth.

“They were disappointed we had lost the game and when we looked at how the goal came about, it’s something we could have dealt with better.

"When you’re down there, those fine margins in football tend to go against you.

"We’ve looked at it and learnt from it. It helps us out to make sure those mistakes don’t happen again."
