Sunday’s trip to Bristol City and next week’s Women’s Super League home fixture against Chelsea were both called off when news of the positive test emerged yesterday.

Several members of Villa’s squad are now being required to self-isolate and the decision to postpone matches was taken in agreement with the FA.

A club statement read: “Aston Villa Women can confirm that a member of our first-team squad has tested positive for COVID-19.

“Several other members of the squad will also enter a period of self-isolation.

“Aston Villa’s main priority is the health and safety of our players, staff, and opponents.”

Villa Women, who had lost their first three games in the WSL after winning promotion from the Championship last season, have been training in a separate location to the men's team since the start of the pandemic.

Gemma Davies’ team claimed their first victory of the campaign with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the Women’s Continental League Cup on Wednesday.

It is understood the Championship club’s upcoming games are still set to go ahead as planned.
