Stafford amateur has shot at history

Stafford’s Sophie Stewart could become the town’s first female national amateur boxing champion with a win in the ABA Juniors light flyweight final.

The 16-year-old, representing Stafford Town ABC, will contest the 48kg title with Gervan Smith, from the Steel City ABC in Sheffield, on Saturday.

The two should have contested last season’s final in Class B but no winner was crowned, after Smith pulled out the day before with a hamstring injury.

Now Stewart will get her chance again in Class B – boxers born in 1995 – and be fresh at the Manchester Boxing Centre of Excellence.

The 4ft 10in pocket rocket received a ‘walk over’ – no opponent to box – in the semi-finals last weekend.
