Two gun for spot in CYP national final
Wednesday 9th November 2011, 6:00AM GMT.
Two amateur fighters from the West Midlands will box for a place in the last two of the Clubs for Young People national championships this weekend.
Wednesbury’s ABC Dale Doody and Pleck ABC’s Liam Etheridge are in the semi-finals at the Havercroft & Ryhill Sports Centre in West Yorkshire.
On Saturday, Etheridge represents the West Midlands in a bantamweight contest against Waleed Din, from the Sheffield Lane Top ABC.
Etheridge became this year’s CYP area champion after shutting out Solihull ABC’s Haider Ali to take a points decision in the Midlands finals.
He was not required to box at the national quarter-finals after opponent Joe Fitzpatrick weighed in heavy, so received a bye into the last four.
Doody has gone all the way to the national semi-finals without throwing a punch, such is the lack of competition at light flyweight.
But he will be called into action on Sunday, where Ardwick’s ABC Marc Leach stands between him and a place in the final.
