Lee Glover confident in Prizefighter
Friday 28th October 2011, 6:00AM BST.
Tipton’s Lee Glover believes he’s got “a great chance” of becoming a star overnight by winning the featherweight Prizefighter at London’s York Hall.
Glover is one of eight men in the one-night, three-rounds-a-fight, winner-take-all tournament , live on Sky Sports tonight.
It’s a walk on the wild side for ‘the Tipton Slasher,’ who hasn’t even boxed on television before, and a chance to make a real name for himself.
Winning Prizefighter is generally regarded as a gateway to a British title shot while the £32,000 grand prize would provide financial security for the boxing builder, who has a young daughter.
The 24-year-old has now fully recovered from a cut to his left eye, which ruled him out of his International Masters featherweight title defence against Dai Davies at Walsall Town Hall on October 8.
And Glover believes he’s got what it takes to adapt to the “different game” of Prizefighter.
He said: “It’s a different game and I will learn a lot from this, it’s an opportunity for me to push forward.
“With youth and speed on my side, I think I have got a great chance.
“But I am just concentrating on winning, I would rather have all of the attention after it’s over.”
Glover could be set for a collison course with Troy James, who he beat as an amateur in the 2008 ABA’s.
The draw won’t be made until the fighters get to the arena tonight with Choi Tseveenpurev, a former WBF world champion, the hot favourite.
But ‘the Mongolian Mauler’ is now 40 and, whether it’s him or James on the other side of the ring, Glover believes he can prevail.
He said: “I wouldn’t take Troy for granted because amateur is different to pro, so I would have to be on top of my game, as I think we both improved.
“Choi is small and strong and keeps throwing punches, he’s still dangerous, so you need to know how to box him.
“I have seen a couple of fights and he’s good, but he’s getting on a bit now. I have got a bit of youth on him so, hopefully, that would bring me through.
“It’s looking good on paper but, on the day, you don’t know what to expect.
“You train fast and sharp because you are going to get either people who are light on their feet or get in close.
“It’s difficult to train for, it’s a mixture, I will stick to what I feel comfortable with on the night and, if it doesn’t work, I will change it.
“I have boxed well against some of the best southpaws in Europe as an amateur, like Luke Campbell, so that doesn’t worry me.”

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
