Blues set to sign Steven Caldwell

Birmingham were today closing in on a deal to sign former Wigan defender Steven Caldwell.

The Scotland international has been in talks about a free transfer move to St Andrew’s, following his release by the Latics.

Scott Dann and Roger Johnson are both likely to be sold in the summer transfer window but, with limited funds for replacements, the experienced Caldwell fits the bill for Blues.

Caldwell then joined Burnley for £400,000 and, in his three-year spell at Turf Moor, captained the Clarets to the Premier League.

The came a move to Wigan, where he joined his brother Gary, but he made only made 15 appearances last season and was not offered a new deal.
