The Clarets are understood to have made an enquiry and are ready to make a formal bid if the 26-year-old is prepared to take a cut on his £35,000-a-week wage demands. Westwood joined Villa in a £2million move from Crewe in 2013 and signed a new five-year deal last August but is set to see his salary drop considerably following the club's relegation to the Championship.

New boss Roberto Di Matteo will wait until pre-season before making any decisions on his current squad, though Westwood is likely to be among those he would ideally like to keep.

Villa have also received enquiries for winger Scott Sinclair, with Celtic reported to have made a £2million bid for the 27-year-old.

Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to be reunited with Sinclair, who was captain when the Scot led Swansea to promotion from the Championship in 2011.

Villa are likely to be reluctant sellers, however, and will demand much more for a player who has three years left on his contract.

Sinclair scored six goals last season, though five of those came before the end of August as he struggled for consistency.
