The claret and blues' hunt for Remi Garde's permanent replacement has been hampered by ongoing takeover talks.

Chairman Steve Hollis conceded last week the appointment of a new boss was in part dependent on the outcome of those discussions.

But Hollis is aware an appointment cannot be delayed forever and is ready to move should negotiations progress no further in the coming weeks.

Pearson has been the long-time frontrunner and remains favourite to land the post, having already held talks with Hollis, with Hull City boss Steve Bruce the most likely alternative.

Villa, meanwhile, host Newcastle tomorrow looking to avoid what would be a club record 12th straight defeat. The visiting Magpies are desperate for a victory to boost their own survival hopes.

With Aly Cissokho suspended following his sending off at Watford, caretaker boss Eric Black has been left without a recognised left-back, with Leandro Bacuna the most likely man to deputise.
