With Villa doomed to relegation and McCarthy having won promotion with Sunderland and Wolves, he can see why he is being mentioned.

The current Ipswich manager is third favourite with some bookies behind David Moyes and Nigel Pearson.

McCarthy said: "I view it as a compliment. I can't help but feel it is a compliment when clubs of that ilk think that I am doing a good job as a manager bearing in mind that I have got two similar clubs promoted."

Meanwhile, Villa director David Bernstein said the club will be 'looking at a whole load of people' in the search for a new manager.

"We are evaluating them properly and professionally and we are not going to rush," said the former FA chairman.

"I want to emphasise to the fans we will not be rushed into this... that is very important."
