Villa's third league win of the season pulled them to within four points of 19th-placed Sunderland.

And as Garde looks to engineer the most unlikely of escapes from relegation, he praised his players for their attitude shown at Villa Park.

He said: "We were missing six or more regular first team players this past weekend but everyone involved was very committed. I think behaving in that way – we still have a chance.

"It's a start. It's a beginning. It's something to work with.

"It's a base we can rely on. We are still believing. My players fighting hard on the field means a lot to me.

"Not winning has been very painful for everyone who loves this football club and then suddenly, you know how it is, your confidence goes up a little bit up.

"Small problems disappear and you look at the faces of everyone and there are more smiles. That's very important.

"Let's say the road is still very long and very difficult. We will have a lot of suffering still. We are ready for that. We will look to find the resource to win this fight."
