The Frenchman insists there are still plenty of points to play for to ensure survival – although he admitted the task will be 'very, very hard'.

Villa are now marooned at the foot of the table, four points behind nearest rivals Sunderland and Bournemouth, and five adrift of Newcastle who lie 17th.

But Garde said: "Panic would be the worst attitude we could have. I think the players are very committed to what we have to do."

He said the fans have a huge part to play if Villa are to pull off one of the greatest escapes in Premier League history.

"The players need to feel that the fans still believe that we can still do it," added the former Lyon chief. "Probably elsewhere in the country nobody still believes in that but at Villa Park we need to still believe that it is still possible."

Carlos Sanchez could be in line for a recall to the starting line-up against Watford on Saturday after Garde said he needed to beef up Villa's midfield, which he said looked 'lightweight' in the defeat at Everton.
