The former England midfielder has managed Fulham and Queens Park Rangers and was caretaker chief at Chelsea in 2009.

The move is not likely to affect former No 2 Kevin MacDonald, who is set to continue with a role in Villa's backing staff.

Wilkins, 58, brings with him a wealth of experience at different levels of the game. He most recently had a spell as head coach of the Jordan national side.

He said: "I will be assisting Kevin MacDonald, Tim and I'm absolutely thrilled to be involved. We've been having a chat for the couple of weeks, a couple of minutes ago it was finalised so I'm thrilled."
