Goals from David Platt and Tony Daley earned a 2-1 win in Division Two. The game will be just the sixth competitive meeting between the two clubs and the first in the top flight.

Villa host Manchester United in their opening home fixture a week later, before travelling to Crystal Palace on August 22. A home game with Sunderland then rounds off the month.

The first derby with Albion takes place on September 19 at Villa Park, with the return game at the Hawthorns on January 23.

Sherwood's side are at home on Boxing Day against West Ham and then face Norwich two days later on December 28.

There is no New Year's Day game, though the claret and blue faithful are faced with a trip to Sunderland on January 2.

Villa's final home game of the campaign is on May 7 and they then round off the season with a trip to Arsenal, a repeat of last season's FA Cup final.

Progress - Tim Sherwood has got Aston Villa going since his appointment in January, but they need to be consistent.
