Chris Herd's time at Villa could be over

Aston Villa today allowed defender Chris Herd to join Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

The 25-year-old Australia international hasn't made an appearance for the claret and blues this season, also spending time at Bolton.

The full-back's contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign so he could have, theoretically, played his last game for the club.

Herd was a surprise inclusion in Australia's Asian Cup squad, but an Achilles injury forced him out without featuring at the tournament.

He will now be looking to aid the Latics' battle against relegation, with Malky Mackay's side second from bottom and five points from safety.
