Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert saw the positives of a point earned after a draw against Southampton in the Premier League.

Nathaniel Clyne smashed in a late leveller for the visiting Saints tonight, just as Villa were ready to clinch a first win in eight games.

Goalkeeper Fraser Forster's clanger from Ciaran Clark's long clearance had gifted Gabby Agbonlahor the opener, with the visitors rarely at their fluid best.

They dominated possession but failed to regularly test goalkeeper Brad Guzan, while Villa were left to rue Andreas Weimann's glaring miss at 1-0.

The point did at least lift Villa, who are without a win in eight games, up to 16th in the Premier League while Southampton stay second.

The draw marked Lambert's 100th game in charge of the club and he said: "I thought it was a really good game against a very good side.

"It's a point gained against a team who had swept everything in front of them aside. If you look at the money spent by these sides, it's a big difference from us.

"We had a great chance to go 2-0 up but I couldn't fault the team. We've got six first-team players out, at the minute, so I can't criticise the team.

"There aren't many quicker than Gabby Agbonlahor and that ball over the top was something we tried this week in training.

"We thought his pace could cause Southampton problems, which it did."
