In the same week as signing a new four-year contract, the club's longest-serving player Gabby Agbonlahor scored the only goal of the game at Anfield.

Lambert, with his team still unbeaten in the Premier League, said: "We are only four games in but we've had a fabulous start. We are in a round of games where people expect us to take no points.

"Any given day you can win any game, it's over the course of the season where injuries can happen and the size of a squad comes into play.

"The lads deserve credit, it's been a great start and I'm delighted with them."

Asked whether he felt nervous that Liverpool might equalise, Lambert replied: "You always are coming here.

"They're a team who came close to winning the league last year and a club that is playing Champions League football.

"It's a massive club with massive resources compared to ourselves. I thought we came and showed no fear.

"It's a terrific football club we were up against but to come here and do what we did was excellent."
