The claret and blues were 2-0 up and cruising through goals from Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann by half-time.

But Villa finished the game on the back-foot after Nikica Jelavic's header halved the deficit and they were also reduced to 10 men.

Captain Ron Vlaar left the field injured after 90 minutes and, having used all three substitutes, the home side were forced to carry on as they were.

Villa manager Paul Lambert said: ""After the first-half we should have been out of sight. The second half we were under pressure, but the first half set the tone of the game.

"You are never going to dominate a game for 90 minutes. But we deserved to win the game. Gabby "Agbonlahor was outstanding, but in general the whole team performance was excellent.

"Vlaar has injured his calf. We will see how he is, but he has two weeks to recover during the international break."
