Nicklas Bendtner today emerged as a shock Villa target as Paul Lambert continues to hunt in the bargain basement.

The former Arsenal striker is available on a free transfer after leaving the Emirates.

Bendtner has reportedly been offered a three-year deal by Eintracht Frankfurt but is keen to stay in the Premier League.

Boss Lambert is moving forward with his summer plans despite the departure of key ally Paul Faulkner after the chief executive left yesterday.

He was offered the chance to move to a different role in chairman Randy Lerner's business – but no agreement was reached.

Faulkner was crucial in transfer negotiations and it remains to be seen if Villa's summer business is affected by his sudden departure.

With Nicklas Helenius keen on a loan move to former club Aalborg, Villa need reinforcements. Helenius has become disillusioned with a lack of opportunities following his £1.2m arrival from Aalborg last summer. Lambert has so far signed Joe Cole and Philippe Senderos on free transfers this summer because of the financial constraints.
