It is understood Lerner has attended two home games and one away this season and has used his box at Villa Park.

The American has come under fire from Villa fans for his lack of communication to supporters and attendance.

He is in regular contact with Lambert and speaks to the manager before and after every game while also talks to chief executive Paul Faulkner in a daily morning phone call.

Villa also rubbished a rumour this week the owner wants to sell after almost eight years at the club and Lambert wants critics to lay off Lerner.

"If anyone who wants to have a shot they are way off the mark," he said.

"He's a private guy and he's entitled to his privacy so you have to respect that. There is not a problem. There is no great issue with him being here. Just look at the facts and the money he's put in.

"He's entitled to his own way of doing things and he's been terrific for this football club.

"He brought me here, he's probably the best chairman I've got on with.

"I've only been here a short time but he's been excellent. He does unbelievable for Acorns too - that's the measure of the man.

"He doesn't take any credit but remains private. The £1 million donation to Acorns was incredible.

"But I don't think his privacy goes against him."
