Villa boss Paul Lambert has defended his team against charges that they can only play counter-attacking football.
His team’s struggles at Villa Park again this season has renewed claims that Lambert’s Villa are a “one-trick pony” solely reliant on a fast-breaking game.
Villa do have some of the worst possession stats in the Premier League but Lambert riles at suggestions they have nothing else up their sleeve.
He says: “There’s more to us than just counter-attacking. We can play.
“The onus is always on the home team to try and make the running.
“I think people know we can score and I think people know we can counter pretty quickly. I’m pretty sure it will maybe prey on somebody’s mind that we can counter attack really quickly.”
There are no apologies from Lambert that his team’s forte will continue.
“Counter attacking football in the modern day game is vital,” he says.
“You see the best teams doing it.”
