Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert today admitted Christian Benteke’s head was turned by interest from Tottenham.
The striker is set to return from a hip injury tomorrow against Spurs, who chased him in the summer.
Benteke handed in a transfer request after a stunning debut season in England before Lambert convinced him to stay and sign a new contract.
Lambert hinted Tottenham made an enquiry but insisted Villa never received a bid and the Belgian has recovered from the summer speculation.
“I was not aware we got a bid,” he said.
“Nearly every team alive came in for him. Some teams you don’t bother with. Unless I hear it from someone’s mouth I don’t think differently.
“I’m pretty sure it was the speculation that got to him. Whether it’s wrong or right, they see it in black and white and believe it must be true.
“It took me a day (to sort the Benteke saga). I bolted the door!
“He’s a good guy and I never had a problem.”
