Villa 'keeper Brad Guzan: We won't roll over for Man City

After their Tottenham terrors, Brad Guzan has vowed Villa will not suffer a Manchester mauling.

moreThe keeper insists Villa will attack Manchester City tomorrow and not shirk their responsibilities.

Manuel Pellegrini's free-scoring outfit have hit nine goals in two games after a crushing 4-1 Manchester derby win and a 5-0 thumping of Wigan in the League Cup.

In contrast Villa were dumped out 4-0 by rampant Spurs on Tuesday amid an injury crisis.

Guzan watched from the bench as Jed Steer tried to keep Tottenham at bay with boss Paul Lambert forced into seven changes.

Gabby Agbonlahor (ankle), Ciaran Clark (thigh), Andi Weimann (rested) and Antonio Luna could all return tomorrow after missing the Spurs defeat.

Christian Benteke, though, is out for up to six weeks with a hip injury in a major blow to Villa's early season hopes.

But Guzan, fresh from his first clean sheet in 27 league games – after last week's 1-0 win at Norwich – said Villa will not roll over against City.

He said: "You have to push every game. Against Norwich we pushed the game and we had a few chances.

"There are going to be points in the game where we take it to them and City take it to us, but it's all about being accountable as individuals and as a team.

"We need to stand up to that pressure and stay strong. When we have our chances we have to take them so it goes both ways, for sure.

"It's going to be a tough game for us, hopefully going back to Villa Park with fans behind us we can make it difficult for them. It's important we stick together, limit their chances and if we do that we'll have half a chance.

"The talent in this league, from top to bottom, is first class. You have to be ready as a goalkeeper.

"For us it will be another challenge and one we can take on board and look forward to."

Villa ended a three-game Premier League losing streak with their Carrow Road win – something Guzan admitted was vital.

He said: "Arsenal seems a long time ago because of the international break but performances have been OK.

"Against Newcastle we knew it wasn't good enough.

"But against Norwich we wanted to come out and make sure we put in a good performance.

"Last year was a battle for us and the most important thing was staying up. This year we got a good result at Arsenal and then our performances were there but the results weren't.

"To get three points against Norwich was huge."

Guzan saved Robert Snodgrass' penalty in Norfolk and denied Gary Hooper at the death to keep the win intact and has earned praise for his performances this season.

But the 28-year-old, who signed a new contract to 2017 in the summer, insisted he is just doing his duty for the cause.

He added: "I just try to help the guys in front of me, if I can make saves then that gives them a boost. It's about doing my job.

"As a goalkeeper you're called on to make saves and come for crosses, if you do that hopefully it makes a difference."

Ashley Westwood (thigh) is a doubt for Villa while Gary Gardner (back) is also struggling.

City could recall Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas after their League Cup win but will have one eye on next week's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

And Pellegrini has promised to continue City's attacking philosophy after their goal glut this week.

"I spoke with the players before we started the Wigan game, telling them we must always try to play the same way," he said. "We can change names but for me it was very important to see the same team we saw last Sunday, the same philosophy of football and the same high performance."
