Paul Lambert today revealed he would be happy to sign players from below the Premier League provided they have the quality and are hungry to play for Villa.

The Scot secured back-to-back promotions with former club Norwich having signed a number of players from the lower leagues, often at bargain prices.

Lambert has been handed a £20m transfer kitty by Villa owner Randy Lerner, plus whatever he is able to raise through player sales, but confirmed that would not stop him from signing a player with potential from outside the top flight.

"You won't know if someone is good enough until you give them an opportunity. If they get the opportunity hopefully they will step up to the plate," said Lambert.

"I think if someone is good enough then they have earned it. All you can ask is people give you their best. I am pretty sure that the lads already here will.

"Whether a player is making little money or a lot of money I still expect effort and desire to win games. That should never deflect from winning games.

"The principle to win games doesn't change regardless of how much people earn.

"If you do well and win games then great. Just as long as you are hungry to do well. That is the main thing."
