Shay Given is backing Richard Dunne to win injury battle

Shay Given today admitted Villa team-mate Richard Dunne will have been “tearing his hair out” while he’s injured but is on course to be fit for Euro 2012.

Dunne is currently recovering from an operation on the fractured collarbone he sustained in Villa’s clash with Manchester City and it was reported recently that the Ireland centre-back’s problem was worse than anticipated. That prompted speculation he could miss the championships.

However, Given insisted Dunne will be back in time for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine having got on with his rehabilitation with the minimum of fuss, even though the Villa keeper knows it has been a source of immense frustration for him.

“He still has a sling, but everything is going to plan. He seemed in pretty good form when I spoke to him a few weeks ago or so,” said Given.

“Everything is on track and hopefully he’ll be OK. He’s been into the training ground the odd day, but there’s not much he can do the minute because of the sling, so I’m sure he’s tearing his hair out at home!”

And Given is even optimistic that Dunne could appear for Villa before he pulls plays at Euro 2012.

“Hopefully we can get him back fit before the end of the season, because ideally you want him playing a few games before the summer, with such a big summer coming up,” added Given.
