Villa star is told he can earn new deal

Carlos Cuellar was today assured he does have a future at Villa and can earn himself a new contract.

The Spanish defender’s current deal expires in the summer and he can leave the claret and blues on a free transfer. But boss Alex McLeish expressed a desire for him to stay at Villa Park.

McLeish had seemed prepared to let Cuellar leave the club last August but a move to Rangers, who he left to join Villa for in June 2008 for £7.6m, collapsed.

And the Villa boss has since been won over by the 30-year-old to the extent he would now prefer it if Cuellar remained with the club.

“I think there have been talks and those talks will be ongoing. I’ve said to Carlos it’s important he keeps playing as well as he can do and then contracts won’t be a problem for him,” said McLeish.

“Would I like to keep him? Why not? If Carlos produces the form I believe he is capable of then we’re going to give the opposition less chances than normal.

“While Richard Dunne is injured this is a chance for Carlos to show what he can do. Carlos knows his (contract) situation so if he needs any more motivation he can look at that.

“He’s a proud guy and a reliable defender as is James Collins and I’m sure the two of them will do well together in Richard’s absence.”
