Robbie Keane today claimed his strike partnership with Darren Bent at Villa can work despite their unconvincing spell together at Tottenham.
The former Wolves forward, who has joined on a two-month loan deal from LA Galaxy, is in line to make his debut against Everton tomorrow with Villa boss Alex McLeish eager to end his side’s four-match losing streak on home turf.
And Ireland international Keane, 31, is confident he and Bent can prove to be a winning formula with the claret and blues during his temporary switch.
“Darren is a top player and has proved that over the years. Even at Tottenham when he did play, he would always score goals,” said Keane.
“He has proved that at every club he has been at. It will be great to play with him. There are other strikers and I look forward to playing with all of them.
“When Darren and I did play together at Spurs, we actually did play well together, even if it wasn’t on many occasions, we were a good partnership.
“We’re different players: Darren likes to play on the shoulder and get in behind, whereas I’m a player who likes to drop off and get the ball off the midfielders and play in between. And Gabby can do a bit of both, drop off or play up high.
“Whether I play with Gabby, or whoever, that’s up to the manager to choose. Of course, you want to build up a good partnership with any striker. In my short spell here, I’ll try to be a good foil for whoever.”
Keane is hoping he can make the same impact at Villa as Thierry Henry has on his return to Arsenal. Henry marked his comeback by netting the winner against Leeds in the midweek FA Cup tie at the Emirates Stadium.
“If I can do something like that in the six games, and help the team, that is great,” added Keane. “If I can help the young players here as well I will.”
