Stiliyan Petrov urges Randy Lerner to give Alex McLeish cash at Aston Villa
Tuesday 20th December 2011, 11:20AM GMT.
Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has urged owner Randy Lerner to give Alex McLeish the cash required to boost his squad in the January transfer window.
McLeish admitted the club must trade carefully in January and is likely to have shift on a few players before he can bring anyone in.
But, when asked if Villa need to make signings in January, Petrov admitted it was essential that McLeish is given money to spend on new players by the club’s American owner.
The midfielder said: “Of course. In the Premier League you cannot afford not to add players during the transfer windows.
“I’m sure Alex will be given the money to strengthen the squad and I hope he can get it because he deserves it. He has been working really hard and it will be nice to see a couple of new faces.
“We missed Gabby Agbonlahor and Darren Bent against Liverpool. We know how important Gabby is for us. He gives us something different when he plays.
“If you look at the bench, and there are a lot of young boys. It’s hard for the young boys but they want to learn and it will take a while and the club is taking big faith in these young players.
“Maybe the fans need to be a little bit patient with them because a young player needs time to build up, especially in the Premier League.”
The 33-year-old Bulgaria international also responded to speculation he could leave Villa in January and insisted he wants to stay at the club until they don’t want him.
He added: “The speculation came out from the blue and I’m very happy at Villa. When transfer windows come, there is speculation but I’m a Villa player and everytime I go out, I play with all my heart.
“I don’t have the intention to go.I want to stay. It’s up to them if they want me, but I’d love to stay and I’m enjoying it.”
