Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has revealed he feels “on trial” every time he plays for England.
Bent, who is aiming to be among Fabio Capello’s 23-man squad for next summer’s Euro 2012 finals, has scored four goals in his last five internationals.
But the £24million club-record signing is looking to impress Capello if the ultimate test against World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on Saturday.
The hunger of the Villa forward cannot be questioned after he missed out on being selected for the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, while England did not qualify for Euro 2008.
Bent said: “Every time you play for your country it is like you are on trial, to be honest. If I get selected, hopefully I’ll do myself justice and hang onto the shirt.
“I’ve got a few goals recently for England but this is going up another gear. Spain are the best team in the world, who won the last World Cup and the Euros.”
