There will be fireworks at Aston Villa

Aston Villa blogger Matthew Turvey is expecting fireworks when his club host a promoted Norwich side with “nothing to lose” when they make the trip to B6.

So here we are, approaching another weekend of football, where Aston Villa will be taking on Norwich at home.

In what is likely to be an interesting encounter for several reasons, the term ‘must win’ seems more regularly spoken by fans of the club.

A term that tends to only be spoken about when desperation kicks in or a winning run needs to be kept going.

Given the fact Villa are not cruising on the end of a six-game winning streak, it’s pretty evident that tomorrow will bring fireworks. The only question is what kind?

It seems rather fitting that this encounter takes place on Bonfire Night, a time where one man plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Villa may not have a Guy Fawkes of their own, but there certainly is a lot going on that could potentially be destructive.

The big question, of course, is will Villa win the game? In years gone by, the very thought of Villa needing to wonder if they would beat a promoted team wouldn’t even arise. It would, by all accounts, be taken for granted.

Nowadays, things aren’t so clear. Ever since the promoted teams realised that you have far more chance of surviving if you come up with your guns blazing, it’s suddenly made the Premier League a more competitive place.

Gone was the time where 18 points could be snapped up by most of the top half, because the three teams came up shell shocked.

Now you are likely to see more attacking from a promoted team than you are a Premier League regular.

It all comes down to what you have to lose. If you are a promoted team like Norwich, you really have absolutely nothing to lose.

The money from coming up is a clear boost to the team and your worst case scenario is you go back down again. No big shakes there, just £50million of TV money in the bank.

Villa, on the other hand, are bound by far different terms. Just as Norwich treat this season much like a fully paid self-perceived five star holiday abroad, so Villa treat it like the same old trip they take to Spain every year.

That is, it’s taken for granted, just like the TV money, just like the regular high league placings. Villa are very much guilty of this kind of problem.

Now let me clarify, this isn’t something solely in the realms of Aston Villa, or even football, it’s in the realms of most people in most places of the world.

Taking things for granted is probably the single most significant cause for heartache across the world. Whether it is in football or love, finance or health, the advice is the same – take things for granted at your peril.

It’s all too easy to point the finger at some external issue and say ‘you are the problem!’ Are they really the problem? Or are you just validating a thought you have?

Something called ‘confirmation bias’ or ‘subjective validation.’ Maybe that person or entity isn’t actually at fault. Maybe you are just wanting to find a way to make them appear that way because of your original view?

Which links me into the point of our manager, Alex McLeish. Here was a man who was, dare I say, hated before he even started at the club by many.

Thus, it isn’t beyond the realms of possiblity that those who hated the guy to start with are going to be hating him now.

Each dropped point is festering to make their blood boil, just like blood boils because of Villa playing poorly in some recent weeks. Emotion is a powerful thing.

So getting back to Norwich, their expectations will be that anything is a good result if it means playing well. If Norwich take a point, they will be happy. If they take three, they will be delighted.

Villa, on the other hand, will be expecting three points. Getting one will be angering. Getting none will be a real cause for concern.

The difference of opinion purely comes from taking things for granted. Nothing more. Nothing less.

So on the day that Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament, there’s a big barrel of gunpowder under the pitch at Villa Park.

The question is will it explode and, if it does, who is it going to take with it?
