Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov ready for Jermaine Jenas challenge

Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov today welcomed the added competition for places in midfield brought about by Jermaine Jenas’ return to fitness.

Jenas joined the claret and blues on a season-long loan deal from Tottenham but has yet to make an appearance, having struggled with a thigh injury and an Achilles problem.

But the 28-year-old midfielder could make his debut against Norwich tomorrow and Petrov believes the increased options can only be a good thing for the club – even though his place will be one of those under threat.

Petrov said: “Jermaine has been unlucky with injuries so far but we know how important he can be for this team. He will be a great addition to the squad when he starts playing.

“We already have competition for places between me, Stephen Ireland, Chris Herd and Fabian Delph, and Jermaine will add to that.”
