Ron Saunders inducts Aston Villa into Football Museum Hall of Fame

Former Aston Villa boss Ron Saunders admits the club’s 1982 European Cup squad are “still like sons” to him after inducting them into the National Football Museum.

Saunders controversially quit Villa that year after a disagreement with the board over his contract with the claret and blues, having reached the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Under his assistant, the late Tony Barton, Villa went on to win European football’s highest honour with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich.

But it was Saunders, 78, who was on hand at a glittering dinner at Villa Park last night to make the award to the players which sealed their place in the Hall of Fame.

He said: “I came up with the phrase ‘110 per cent’ and people said to me ‘you can’t get 110 per cent’ but the thing was I knew I could get the players to give that something extra.

“To see them honoured in this way for the European Cup win makes me so proud. Even after all these years they are all still like sons to me.”
