Aston Villa rule Barry Bannan out of Sunderland trip after arrest

Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan was has been ruled out of the game at Sunderland at the weekend while the club investigate his arrest on suspicion of drink driving.

The 21-year-old was involved in an incident near junction 26 of the M1 at around 5.30am on Sunday along with Shrewsbury striker James Collins, a former Villa player, for which he was arrested and subsequently bailed.

And Villa boss Alex McLeish confirmed that the Scotland international will not be in the party which travels to the Stadium of Light, as the claret and blues decide on what action to take against the player.

McLeish said: “Barry has been suspended while the club carries out internal enquiries into allegations which arose last weekend. He will not be available for this weekend’s game at Sunderland.”

Absolutely rediculous, he is being dealt with by the law, it has nothing to do with his performances on the pitch. He is one of the best players we have and Man U are already sniffing around him and if we upset now he will be another star player to leave the club.
