Barry Bannan faces the rap at Aston Villa after drink driving charge
Tuesday 25th October 2011, 11:09AM BST.
Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan was today facing a slap on the wrists as the club launched an investigation after he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
The 21-year-old Scotland international was brethalysed by police in the early hours of Sunday morning – along with the Shrewsbury striker James Collins, a former Villa player – and subsequently bailed after failing to stop at the scene of an accident near junction 26 of the M1.
Bannan did not join with his team-mates at an open training session held at Villa Park yesterday and may face additional punishment, should club officials deem it necessary.
It is a blow to the youngster, who has won over manager Alex McLeish and Scotland boss Craig Levein with a string of impressive performances.
McLeish said: “There are internal inquiries and an investigation going on and that’s all I can really say at the moment. We felt it was best that he did not train with the team.”
