Aston Villa appeal Chris Herd’s red card against West Brom
Monday 24th October 2011, 11:50AM BST.
Aston Villa today launched an appeal against Chris Herd’s controversial red card against West Brom in a bid to halt the defender’s looming three-game ban.
The 22-year-old Australian was sent off in the 37th minute of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Albion for an alleged stamp on Jonas Olsson.
Manager Alex McLeish insisted he would consider an appeal after television replays proved inconclusive and the club have now lodged one with the Football Association.
Referee Phil Dowd dismissed Herd and awarded Albion a first-half penalty – which Chris Brunt missed – after he was alerted by assistant Darren Cann.
McLeish said: “We will see what the outcome is. The slow-motion replay indicated that Chris was extracting his foot from Olsson’s grasp. I just could not see a stamp in that situation.”

I’d have been livid if one of ours was sent off and a penalty given for that; though Huttton should’ve had a straight red for his first challenge on Long. McLeish needs to be investigated as well … it seemed like Hutton had been given his orders (i.e. cripple Long) – disraceful tactics and Villa got what they deserved.

They should just swap his red card to Alan Hutton, if they can appeal against that then surely Hutton should get one on vide evidence

As no2 said. Maybe Herd’s should be receded and a ban given retrospectively to Hutton.

Wombourne. Totally agree. I would appeal if Jones for example had been ordered off for a similar non-offense.
Alex McCleish should take a leaf out of Fergie’s book. Fergie didn’t defend Jonny Evans yesterday for his poor play that got a deserved Red card. McCleish should come out now against Hutton flying in as he did. Unless of course he agrees with those kind of tackles. As someone said on MOTD 30 years ago a defender would have got a new contract for a challenge like that. But times have changed. Time for McCleish to get up to date. Villa looked a lot like Blues did last season. And we all know how that ended.
From a Baggies point of view I just hope Long isn’t seriously injured. He’s been a real threat this season.

It seems after watching the tv of the game, that Shane Long was a marked man,and there should be a investigation of this.Villa were a disgrace in there tackling.

Hutton took the ball first !
Want a no contact game ?

Wombourne, I do agree with you, in fact I think it should happen to every player who gets away with it on the pitch.
KP, there aint a Villa fan who would argue your point on either the sending off or Hutton s challenge, though I cant agree that he was under any orders from anywhere.
Hutton is not that good a player, in fact he’s rubbish, but he tries to make up for his lack of skill and his shortcomings with over exuberance and the end result is tackles like that one.
However, you Braggies broke the Villa Park Voodoo and walked away with all three points and the bragging rights, so a well done from me.
Congrats to your fans too, they out shouted us again, you are a credit to your and my 2nd favourite club, so well done.

Agreed Wombourne, seems like a fair swap. funnily enough though McLeish didn’t suggest that

PaulVilla – Are you having a laugh mate, Hutton went over the top of the ball. Should Long’s leg have been grounded we would of seen another horrific injury!
Re- No5. It doesn’t matter if he took the ball first. It was a two footed lunge, with his studs. A plain booking at least even if you are wearing your claret and blue glasses.

Red card looked a bit harsh, but we havn’t had the luxury of seeing it from the linemans angle ? how about giving his 3 match ban to Hutton instead, for his disgusting attempted leg breaker !
No he did not take the ball first at all !!…look again
Report abuse
Paulvilla-where in the rules does it say that it’s ok to take a player completely out as long as you get the ball first?! Long is just lucky he hasn’t got 2 broken legs!

In case you are interested in a neutral view I agree with the previous posts about both incidents. Herd seemed unlucky but Huttons assault was planned and dangerous. Long ran rings round us last week but I am proud that we did not resort to such tactics. Villa have rarely played like that over the years and Blues reguarly have so I guess this should not be a suprise to anyone considering who’s in charge.

Sadly paulvilla when the challenge is committed against their player supporters yell for a return of the death penalty. When one of their own make the challenge it is a great tacklle. I played football at a decent level when a challenge like Hutton made was considered a tremendous challenge. No complaints from anyone, but sadly those days are gone. Tackling has effectively been taken out of the game, you are only allowed to intercept. FIFA, Platini etc have got their way and sadly turned our once great game into a non contact sport for overpaid prima donnas, and therefore Hutton’s challenge was not acceptable ( I note even Tony Bomber Brown thought initially it was a very good tackle) and could well have seen red. As for Herd’s sending off? Complete and utter nonsense.
No wonder attendances are dwindling

Lads don’t be so incredibly one eyed. By all means argue that Hutton’s challenge was reckles ( under the current poncy rules I would tend to agree) but him getting the ball first is a matter of fact not opinion.

6 paulvilla if olson would have done that to bent would you still be saying the same thing

Indeed “Hutton”hammered Long in a rugby style tackle , but no damage was inflicted by studs . Perhaps the rules should be changed and video replays made available for appeal against decisions and results . Why not rule out results when controversy and bad ref’s ruin a game of entertainment ? I’m being ridiculous of course !!!
Professional players “seldom” intend to injure .
Revenge would be sweet , but expensive !

I got invited by a mate of mine who`s a villa fan to go on saturday.
I would say as a neutral that Herds red was baffling and Huttons tackle was basically assault. Shane Long was always going to be too quick for him all game so he decided to let him know who`s boss.
As it happens I think it backfired because none of villas back four could handle that enormous Tchoi bloke that replaced him.
It was an enjoyable game and wba definitely deserved the win as they outpassed villa and created practically all of the chances.
As my mate said villa have gone backwards under McCleish and I think their in for a long hard season.

Typical of Villa fans, watch Mcleish in his interview afterwards bleating about Herd sending off not so much of a whisper about a tackle that could have finished Long for the season, bet Blues were glad to see the back of him & thank god he will never be Albion manager.
Watch out Villa Baggies will soon be top dogs in the midlands we have a far better & more football minded manager.

I have watched Albion since 1944 and the games with Villa were always ‘special’. Hard, but fair. No fair-minded Villa supporter would want to be associated with that sort of tackling carried out, assassination style, by Hutton. Quite obviously ‘under orders’. I wanted you all to accept McLeish in spite of the Blues association. Now ? You are welcome to him! Villa Board should be dragging Martin O’Neill back a.s.a.p.

Mr.MacLeish,
What did the video show before the extraction?. Well I’ll tell you, Mr.MacLeish. It showed your player back stamping Olsson didn’t it, Mr. MacLeish. If you can’t tell all the story don’t comment, get it Mr.MacLeish. It’s a disgrace what YOUR players were doing out there and you know it, Mr.MacLeish. What were your orders “Get in their faces”, we all know what that means don’t we, Mr.MacLeish?.
BOING~~~~BOING~~~~JtH.

Long is now out for 6 weeks, I hope that Paul Villa is happy about that. I also hope that when we play the Villa at the Hawthorns that Hutton gets the same treatment. I’m sure he will.
It’s a pity that Long will be out for up to 6 weeks . Hopefully it will not be that long .
Obviously #24 believes in hard tackles and revenge . So the WBA team will be hard ? Or will they show all of us the way to fair and great play !
Message to Paul Villa, let’s hope the Albion will be fair on Hutton as he was on Long, and break only one leg.

Enough stupidity and good luck to WBA .
