Darren Bent ruled out of Villa trip

Darren Bent was today ruled out of Aston Villa’s trip to Queens Park Rangers through injury which has forced manager Alex McLeish to recall Andreas Weimann from his loan spell at Watford.

The England striker limped out of Villa’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle last weekend with a groin injury and missed the Carling Cup defeat to Bolton.

McLeish is also without Emile Heskey for the next fortnight as he recovers from a hamstring problem, leaving him with Gabby Agbonlahor and Nathan Delfouneso as the only available forwards at Loftus Road on Sunday.

The Villa boss said: “Darren is out which is disappointing but it is better that we get him right rather than it being a bit longer – we have to get him right.

“He is not bad and we are hopeful he will be ready for the next game. He has a scan and it was quite encouraging, in terms of good news for Darren.

“There is a bit of fluid but it wasn’t anything which would suggest that he will be out for longer or that he would have to an operation so, from that perspective, it’s good news.”

McLeish confirmed Jermaine Jenas is rated as “50-50” for the match, while defenders Ciaran Clark (knee), Carlos Cuellar (knee) and Eric Lichaj (hip) are all out.

But Chris Herd should be fit enough for a place on the bench after a hamstring injury.
