Villa boss Alex McLeish unlikely to move for James McFadden

Aston Villa are unlikely to make a move for free agent James McFadden although manager Alex McLeish hinted that the club will do further business in the next transfer window.

McLeish signed the versatile striker for £5m from Everton when he was in charge of Birmingham, and has a soft spot for the 28-year-old who gave him a memorable moment as Scotland boss when he scored the winner against France in a Euro 2008 qualifier.

McFadden was released by Blues at the end of last season after a cruciate ligament injury and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is preparing to offer him a trial.

But with the necessity to keep the wage bill under control McLeish is unlikely to follow suit and happy to wait until January to further strengthen his squad.

“It’s all well and good saying ‘McFadden is available on a free’ but he is not really free is he? He is available but you still have his wages etc,” said McLeish.
