Jean Makoun heads for Villa exit
Monday 29th August 2011, 11:22AM BST.
A revived bid by Olympiakos for Villa midfielder Jean Makoun could be the trigger for some late transfer business by Alex McLeish this week.
The Villa manager has been talking down the prospect of any significant additions to his squad because of owner Randy Lerner’s directive to bring the wage bill under control.
But the departure of Makoun, who has only ever been on the fringe of first-team action since arriving from Lyon under previous boss Gerard Houllier, would follow the exit of Luke Young to QPR this weekend.
With the end of the transfer window looming, Villa rejected an offer for the Cameroon international last week but the Greek club are trying to revive their offer of a loan deal with a view to a permanent signing.
Makoun has yet to feature in the Premier League this season and was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Wolves.
He did start the Carling Cup success over Hereford and admitted he would be prepared to fight for his place at Villa Park. Spurs’ Alan Hutton remains the most likely target and captain Stiliyan Petrov said: “It would be nice if we could bring some more bodies. It seems everyone is strengthening their teams.”
