Aston Villa win could be a springboard
Friday 26th August 2011, 6:00AM BST.
Aston Villa blogger Matthew Turvey believes his club can kick on if they take the spoils from the first West Midlands derby of the Premier League season, at home to Wolves.
So the first West Midlands derby of the Premier League season is upon us.
And if you were to say to me before the season started that Aston Villa versus Wolves would be a top of the table clash, I probably would have laughed.
Not because I thought that we couldn’t be high up, given our early fixtures, but because Wolves aren’t used to the heady heights.
I, obviously, fully expect to get comments below from Wolves fan arguing their case and that is totally understandable. We are, after all, rivals.
Anyway, enough waffle regarding the positioning of where we are in the table. It’s early days and often the team top at Christmas doesn’t win the title, let alone the team top at the start of game three.
Therefore it’s probably best to focus on the game itself, rather than how it is going to affect the end of the campaign.
Villa meet Wolves at a time where both clubs are seemingly performing more effectively than last season.
With Villa avoiding relegation two games from the end of the campaign and Wolves only managing it on the last day, arguably the only way was up for both teams, when you consider that the promoted teams are always the favourites for returning back to the Championship.
The match itself could go any one of any number of ways. On one hand, Wolves did well in this fixture last season, beating Villa. On the other, Villa seem different under McLeish.
How exactly they are different is something of a je ne sais quoi but I feel that Villa will perform well under McLeish. This season may not be the one where we re-qualify for Europe, but it will be step in the right direction.
Anyway, I digress again. I expect Villa to retain confidence in our 4-2-3-1 formation with many players performing effectively in the role.
In deploying such a formation, McLeish quickly rubbished the idea that he can only play defensive football and, effectively, admitted that the only reason he did such a thing with Birmingham was because that was all they were capable of. You can only do so much with what you are given, after all.
With regard to the tactics, some of the selections seemed bizarre at the time of initiating 4-2-3-1 under McLeish, so one can only applaud the fact that Alex has Gabby Agbonlahor playing well, albeit in a strange position.
Anything that helps our longest-serving player can only help to reinforce the loyalty of younger stars coming through. Sometimes the best moves aren’t always the most obvious ones.
As for selections, most had expected Marc Albrighton to just step directly into the right wing position, but I am glad he hasn’t.
By that, I don’t mean that I don’t rate Albrighton, just that a talent such as he should be able to have time to develop.
Sometimes the worst thing you can do for a young player is shove them into the limelight. It isn’t like we don’t have past form for high expectations from our kids either.
This weight on their shoulders has taken toll on them and many have faded away before really getting going.
If we can progress our future starts slowly, then we will have a better chance of forging a better team for Villa in the long term. Patience, once again, is a virtue.
Should we work hard for the 90 minutes, I believe we are capable of getting a win. The game is certainly winnable and it could be the start of a period where we are in the top six.
At least for the next few months, anyway.

You are totally correct that Wolves never expected to win their first two games. The reason being is that Blackburn were one of our bogey teams. One thing for certain, being a Wolves fan, we will not be getting carried away. In assessment of Villa, Given is obviously an improvement and N’Zogbia a good replacement for one of the departees! I still feel, though, that the current back four will get found out in time? Clark will have to play at some stage. As for Wolves..? Johnson is a quality signing and having a fully fit Hunt and O’Hara makes a major difference and allows us the luxury of playing Doyle and Fletcher in tandem – quality forwards!
Law of averages point to Villa edging a win but Wolves are capable of getting something out of the game?
PS both teams need to sign a couple of players before transfer deadline, I suspect?

Wolves have had a solid start, but their win at Villa last season came from what I would consider as Villa’s lowest point in a very long time… Both teams played absolutely diabolically, but Wolves were the better of two evils!
I’m excited to see how it plays out this Saturday, as we’re both hungry for those much needed early points, and players are looking to prove themselves all round.
I predict a tough game but 2 – 1 Villa win.

Wolves will be very tough and I’ll settle for any kind of win.

As a Wolves fan, I would be expecting at least a draw out of this, but I wouldn’t settle for that now, and neither will the team!
O’hara and Hunt are both due a goal. Doyle & Fletcher are already off the mark..
One thing I’m definitely NOT expecting is a 0:0!!!!
The Villa fans I know at least seem to think that Villa only have to turn up – let’s hope their players feel the same…

Not sure that Villa do well with early kick offs so i’m expecting a 0-0 result

2) Correct Mark but Wolves should have won at Villa Park the previous year also. As we have 6 points in the bag, there is no pressure on Wolves.
This will be either 1-1 or 2-1 either way, I suspect?

Villa 4-0

Unfortunately I am expecting a lot of 0_0′s this season. Blackburn are total rubbish and any half decent dide will beat them by 3 clear goals.I fear the worst against the Dingles I think that their physical approach to the game will overwhelm our ageing defence, so I suppose a 0_0 doesn’t sound that bad after all!

Thank you to everyone for your comments so far.
It is a tough one, and all comes down to the day. In derbies, after all, anything can happen.
I’d like to see a solid performance, and I hope that means we have enough to beat Wolves, even if it is only by a single goal such as 2-1.
Certainly need to do better than the last time we played at Villa Park, where we lost 1-0.
Coincidentally, Wolves were the last team to beat us at home in March 2011.

If Villa fans think we’re going to be a push over they’ll be wrong. Think it’s two teams with a renewed confidence so should be a good game. Hope Wolves win, we seem to have learned a lot and RJ seems very solid at the back. Yeee hargh!!! Come on Wanderers!
