Marc Albrighton looks to fill Villa void
Thursday 21st July 2011, 1:45PM BST.
Marc Albrighton has backed himself to provide Aston Villa’s attacking threat out wide following the departures of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing.
The winger established himself in Villa’s first-team squad last season and went on to make 33 appearances in all competitions, netting six goals.
Young’s move to Manchester United and Downing’s switch to Liverpool means that the 21-year-old will be afforded the chance to play more games this season.
And, while the youngster admitted he has picked up a lot from the pair, Albrighton is confident he will be able to step out of their shadows when the new campaign gets underway.
He said: “They are two of the best wingers in England at the moment so to learn from players like that for the last two or three years has been great for me.
“That’s something that I haven’t got this year which I think I’m going to miss. I don’t have them this year, but hopefully they’ve given me enough lessons to show my own ability and go out there and perform.
“They are big boots to fill, but for me it’s an opportunity. I’ll go out there and do my best.
“Playing in Premier League games is the only way you’re going to be able to test yourself, and you’re testing yourself against the best there.
“To play every week would be great for me if I can manage that.”
