Fabian Delph looks to bounce back

Fabian Delph is optimistic his injury problems are behind him as he looks to establish himself as a first-team regular under new Villa boss Alex McLeish.

The 21-year-old midfielder has endured a stop-start career since he joined Villa from Leeds for £9million in August 2009, after suffering a number of injury problems.

A cruciate knee ligament injury suffered in April 2010 kept him on the sidelines for the majority of last season and he subsequently suffered a number of niggling problems after making his comeback.

Delph picked up an ankle injury in the final game of the campaign against Liverpool which meant that, while his team-mates have enjoyed a summer break, he has been working hard on his rehabilitation at Bodymoor Heath.

He said: “I managed to tear the ligament in between the fibula and tibia in the last game of the season. I got pushed in the back and got my studs caught and twisted and just opened up the joints.

“I’m three or four weeks into it the rehab now, so I think another three to four weeks and I should be fine, touch wood. I should be back by probably the second or third week in July.

“I’ll still be able to run so I’ll be doing my fitness, I just won’t be able to work with the boys.

“Once I’ve overcome this injury and got a few of the pre-season games in I’ll be sharp and the same as I was before I did my knee.

“Hopefully I can get playing and get back to my old ways.”
