New Villa boss must build from back

Villa blogger Matthew Turvey takes a look at what players new manager Alex McLeish needs for his first season in charge, starting in goal and defence.

Earlier this week, Alex McLeish was appointed Aston Villa manager to a mixed response.

Now that McLeish is in the job and Villa fans, for the most part, have accepted the decision, ‘Big Eck’ will need to fill quite a number of spaces across most positions in the Villa squad.

So, in this first article, I am going to cover the areas of goalkeeper and defence. And, without a doubt, the first priority will have to be a goalkeeper.

With Brad Friedel leaving to join Tottenham and Andy Marshall or Brad Guzan unlikely to fill the role of first choice, McLeish will need to make a foray into the market for a No 1.

In all likelihood, his choice of goalkeeper will be from an obvious pool of names.

His main man at Birmingham, Ben Foster, seems the most obvious link, given as he is talented and comes from McLeish’s former club.

Add into that the fact that, barring Joe Hart, Foster would be England’s No 1, then you have a pretty solid choice.

Foster would be my pick, but the £10million vaunted price tag might be too rich for our £40million budget.

Beyond Foster, the likely candidates are Manchester City’s Shay Given, West Ham’s Robert Green, Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi and Allan McGregor at Glasgow Rangers.

Of those choices, I would personally look at Al-Habsi as a good option.

Why? Given is good but getting on and would be out of practice, Green needs to get his confidence back from his England nightmare and we can’t risk him taking time and McGregor seems unlikely to leave Rangers.

With the difference Al-Habsi made to the Wigan squad when constantly under pressure, it seems a fairly obvious choice.

So, moving on from the goalkeeper, where next?

After a shaky season under the managerial stewardship of Gerard Houllier, the partnership of Richard Dunne and James Collins seems to not be as solid as it was when Martin O’Neill was boss.

Is this down to tactics or the players? I would it’s six of one and half-a-dozen of the other.

Certainly, Dunne and Collins are not able to play a Barcelona-style passing game and this is where they came unstuck under Houllier’s stewardship.

Under O’Neill, there were a lot more defensive players operating, so the pressure on the centre-backs was nowhere near as much as it would be under 4-2-3-1.

So the choice is simple – we either sell the pair and buy a more solid pairing that can operate in a more modern formation, or we go back to 4-4-2 based, counter attacking O’Neill-style football. I know which I would prefer and it isn’t 4-4-2.

To that end, we need at least one more centre-half from outside the squad. For me, we need to be building a spine of a team from back to front so, with a good goalkeeper and Darren Bent up front, we need a big central defender and a solid central midfielder.

Who would I go for as a centre half?  It’s tough making these kind of choices and they don’t come cheap, but I would go for either Blackburn’s Christopher Samba of Blackburn, Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Fulham’s Brede Hangeland.

None of these players would be likely to give much change out of £15million but, to build a solid team, you have to start with a solid spine.

Sure, Bent is a good striker but he can’t play all over the field and still maintain his goalscoring form.

You have to have at least four top quality players in a team for things to work. Without that, you risk the chance of losing possession somewhere from the back to the front. Assuming you want to play a passing game that is.

Putting these players in will prove to be a solid start to a spine that will help Villa progress.

Next week, I will be covering who we should purchase in the midfield and forward positions.

Until then, enjoy your weekend and here’s to a good season ahead.

Getting Cahill back would be a very good fan pleasing effort from Big Eck!

Cahill and Clark with Dunne and Collins as competition?

Give Guzan a shot at the no 1 shirt this season.

I want to see us go back in for Bradley though, i just feel he could be a useful addition.

For me just a new left back then, but who?
Or would Luke Young and Eric Lehij be enough as both can cover either full back positions.

Steve, can’t agree with you on Guzan. He has looked anything but convincing when asked to fill in between the sticks, el Habsi or Given providing his wages are not extortionate seem the obvious choices to me

I think ben foster would be a excellent buy, although if money does come into play then i think Given will be the next best option as he is still a top quality keeper with
    expeirence, which we will need.

As for defence i would like to see us maybe go in for Upson, he is again a England Player and usually starts when one of Terry and Ferdinand are out, and he is good on the ball him and dunne would be a nice partnership. And if we feel a bit more flamboyent then maybe a lescott or a Jag’s, whip the money out.
Midfield i think Scott Parker must be a serious target for us, he is what we are seriously missing in the midfeild along with some creativity this is where my biggest changes would come.
A midfelider with some creative genius, and this is where i am stumped!
up front well Abonglahor is in need of a good season and if he can find the form of two years ago he and bent would make a great combo.

Jim, I’m with you on Guzan, I thought he might come good when he first came to Villa, but a couple of penalty saves a goalkeeper do not make.
There are Keepers out there that I would prefer, but also promote Parrish to #2, the experience will do him no harm and in a couple of years, he would be ready to step up.

We already have a capable keeper, already brought and knows the squad… no settling in period, no need to spend any dough and it helps balance the books before european legislation comes into effect.

I personally don’t see the need to splash cash on positions we don’t need too.

But hey thats just my opinion.

Goalkeeper: HAS to be foster.Given 2nd choice.

Defence: Upson for free would be a great option, Dann is a great player.Im NOT a bluenose either !!

MIdfield : Agree with Parker but just cant see it, i hope its not Brown from Celtic or any other scottish player, simply just not good enough.Joe Cole anyone ?

Striker : Berbatov !! ,crouch, defoe,Poldoski,Bothroyd, Keane,Klasnic, whoever!, we NEED another striker because we cannot rely on Bent all season.Gabby will be ok but he’s not the best is he ?

And another player as replacement for Ash Young, i think N’Zogbia is a player we should look at getting in, Verstaille, speed and good finisher.

I agree with you billy, but apart from the dann comment, reason why foster was as good as he was last season it was because the blues defence was pants, and bringing 2 of there back 5 wouldnt be good business!
    Wes Brown another possibility?

Parker i cant see why not unless a top 4 team come in for him and then would he be guarnteed to start every game? Prob not.

Joe Cole would be good! but will he ever be back to the old Joe Cole, Another player who Liverpool has ruined.
Owen Hargreaves? if he can stay injury free?
    Pay as you play contract?

Gabby could be great, but maybe sturridge or anelka if he is let go for cheap!

Any thoughts on going for Wijnaldum? I will be covering midfielders and forwards next week.

Foster has to be the first choice and worth the spend. I think Upson would be a bargain too as a free agent. What is the current situation with Kyle Walker, Are we trying to have another season from him on loan?

E&S printed a story about Charlie Adam the other day, I think this would be a bold move and again worth the spend. Who would we get to replace Downing though? N’Zogbia is a good suggestion, what  about McGeady?

If we’re struggling for a big transfer budget why not cash in on done of the free agents – Viera for instance.

AM said in his fans forum he wants to pair Bent and Gabby up front as he sees a lot of talent in Gabby. So with Downing and Alby on the wings, he said Delph will get a chance too so we only need 1 more midfielder for a starting berth. Parker or Adam next to Delph would be excellent.

Defensively, Upson would be good BUT not as a starter. Definately Hangeeland would be good, but if AM and the board want the fans completely onside, there is only 1 centre back we need to target – Gary Cahill.

If AM can get Gabby and Bent working well together it would be a fantastic partnership, Defenses wont know if they need to push up or drop back…

At the back Foster has to be the best choice, inflated price or not. I think Clark should be given more of a chance this year in the middle of defense as I think we need more pace in there.

Left and right backs are gonna be an issue if we can’t keep Walker. It would be good to have Warnock back in the squad, but he is average and neither shuts people out for 90min’s nor attacks with any menice so we need to look for new blood….

I think Delph can step us this year and if Bannan is given a real run he could be the play maker we need. AM could be smart if he brought Reo back.

Have a look at the Villa highlights video from the season before last. Gabby was electric under MON (Milner was class but …hey ho). Gabby not suited to GH’s slow build up style passing game but a fantastic option on the counter attack when he gets his confidence back.

Can you honestly see Eck trying to play the Barcelona way? He was a centre half (if in doubt kick it out!). He will try to build a solid defence and will rely on Gabby’s pace and Bent’s finishing. Collins, Cueller and Clark are are solid defenders in an appropriate system, although Carlos may soon be nos vemos. Dunne – past his sell by date for me as is Upson. Charlie Adam would be a great signing for a counter attacking style.

I reckon a good keeper and two full-backs will be the priority. Shay Given would be my choice. Foster has only really had one decent season and has looked quite shakey in some games. Full backs could be trickier to find. One thing is for sure – they need to be quick in the EPL.
