Villa striker Nathan Delfouneso has told of the hunger within the England under-21 squad to land the country's first European Championship title since 1984.

Stuart Pearce's side reached the final of the tournament in Sweden two years ago but suffered disappointment when they were defeated 4-0 by a strong Germany team.

And the 20-year-old forward believes there is sufficient quality in the England squad to go one better in Denmark ahead of their opening game against Spain on Sunday.

Delfouneso said: "We're here to win it. Over the past couple of years we've gone from bronze to silver and now we believe it's time to go and get the gold and bring back the trophy.

"It is about progression but we also really want to win it as well, and that's the aim for everyone here.

"In our dressing room, we've got a lot of talkers. I feel everyone encourages each other. We were close together as it was.

"It's been well documented about the players that are not here but we're all very comfortable with everyone that's here.

Quality

"We're all quality players and believe we can push together and take back the trophy."

The Birmingham-born striker, who has won seven caps and scored two goals for the Under-21 side, admitted Sunday's game against tournament favourites Spain will be special for him personally.

"I'm a big fan of Spanish football and I do watch it a lot," explained Delfouneso.

"I know some of the players they've got there and they do have a lot of quality.

"But we've got to believe in ourselves that we've got quality players as well and we can go and put in a great performance and can go and beat them."
