Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Carlos Cuellar top of Rangers targets
Thursday 9th June 2011, 10:00AM BST.
Villa defender Carlos Cuelllar has been confirmed as at the top of his former club Glasgow Rangers’ wanted list.
New Rangers boss Ally McCoist has officially spoken of his desire to sign the 29-year-old.
The Spaniard revealed yesterday that he would was “excited” about the possibility of a return to the Scottish Premier League with Rangers.
Cuellar is currently recovering from an operation on his knee and has been linked with a move north of the border, after making just 12 Premier League appearances for Villa last season.
The centre-half stated his desire to remain at Villa last month via Twitter after rumoured interest from clubs in his native Spain, including Villarreal and Espanyol.
Now interest from Rangers, who sold him to Villa for £7.8million in 2008, has prompted a rethink although the SPL champions may struggle to match Cuellar’s wage demand.
But McCoist is keen to open negotiations with Villa over a possible transfer, although he realises he may have to wait until a new manager is appointed.
He said: “I don’t like talking about other people’s players, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in a player of Carlos’ quality.
“I’m back in the country now so it’s a matter of the clubs making contact and taking it from there.
“The managerial situation at Villa complicates the issue but as soon as they have made an appointment I’ll be in touch to ask about Carlos’ availability.
“It will be up to Villa’s new boss to decide if he’s willing to do business or not.”
