Carlos Cuellar could return to Rangers

Villa defender Carlos Cuellar has revealed he is “excited” by the possibility of a return to the Scottish Premier League with former club Glasgow Rangers.

The 29-year-old Spaniard is currently recovering from an operation on his meniscus but has been linked with a move away, after finding his first-team opportunities limited last season having made just 12 Premier League appearances.

A lack of match action had prompted speculation that Cuellar, who signed for Villa for £7.8million from Rangers in 2008, could be one of those shown the exit door as the claret and blues look to trim the wage bill.

Cuellar last month stated his desire to remain at Villa via Twitter after rumoured interest from clubs in his native Spain, including Villarreal and Espanyol.

But the popular defender could be tempted by a move north of the border, although his wages could prove to be a stumbling block.

Cuellar said: “Obviously I have to find out what Villa want me to do but I’m very surprised to hear that Rangers want me back.

“A lot of people have been talking about it on the internet and on Twitter saying, ‘I want Carlos back – or Carlos has to be here.’

“It’s exciting because Rangers, for me, has so many good memories. It’s exciting if there is a possibility to go back because all of those good memories come back – the city, the club, the people, how much they loved me and how much I loved them.

“Then there is the Champions League and the chance to win trophies again.

“Who wouldn’t be excited about something like that?”
