Goalkeeper Brad Friedel today signed for Tottenham after he rejected contract offers from Villa and Albion.

Villa had been prepared to give the 40-year-old American only a one-year deal with incentives on the understanding he would be back-up to a new keeper – likely to be West Ham’s Robert Green – but Friedel had been holding out for an extra year.

Albion had also been in talks with Friedel and had been prepared to offer him the desired two years as well as first-team football at The Hawthorns.

But the Baggies were unable to match the terms offered by Spurs and head coach Roy Hodgson will now turn his attentions to bringing Manchester United stopper Tomasz Kuszczak back to the club.
